Didier Drogba’s bid for the presidency of the Ivorian Football Association (FIF) received a further set back on Tuesday when the nation’s player association (AFI) announced it was backing a rival.
Drogba needs a nomination from one of five eligible bodies to stand. AFI was the fourth to make its choice, and, like the three that had already announced their endorsement, decided against the national team’s all-time top scorer.
AFI said it was backing current FIF vice-president Idriss Diallo, who has the backing of former internationals Bonaventure Kalou, Cyril Domoraud and Ahmed Ouattara, in the September 5 election.
“In line with the majority of its members, the board decided to grant AFI’s sponsorship to the list led by Idriss Diallo,” AFI said in a statement signed by its general secretary Aruna Dindane, another former international.
“This choice is in line with the recommendation made by two thirds of the delegates at the end of last Friday’s meeting,” said the statement.
Yaya Toure, who like his brother Kolo Toure has backed Drogba, expressed his dismay.
“Ivorian players playing in Europe are worried about the current situation and do not understand why AFI does not seem to want to give its sponsorship to Didier Drogba,” said Yaya Toure.
Of the five groups that can sponsor a candidate, four have already made their choice.
The association of coaches, like AFI, has supported Diallo. The association of former players and the association of referees are sponsoring league president Sory Diabate, who also has the backing of the country’s most-capped player Didier Zokora and former internationals Youssouf Falikou Fofana and Abdoulaye ‘Ben Badi’ Traore.
Only the society of football doctors has not yet endorsed a candidate.

An underwhelming Chelsea on Tuesday boosted their chances of a berth in next season’s UEFA Champions League by overcoming a slow start to beat relegated Norwich City 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Olivier Giroud scored with virtually the last touch of the first half as Chelsea consolidated third place in the English Premier League (EPL).
They moved four points above Leicester City and Manchester United in the battle for a top-four finish.
It was an eighth successive league defeat for Norwich, who were already condemned to relegation after losing to West Ham United on Saturday.
Chelsea struggled to convert their overwhelming possession into goals but deserved the three points after a diving Giroud scored from point-blank range.

Some 600 Boko Haram members were freed in Nigeria on Monday after they regretted their membership and completed a rehabilitation and reintegration program.
Bamidele Shafa, spokesperson for the Nigerian military’s Operation Safe Corridor, said members of the terror group who were caught in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states had sworn an oath of allegiance to the Republic of Nigeria.
Shafa said the freed men will not rejoin Boko Haram and that 1,400 other Boko Haram fighters who renounced their membership were released previously.

Boko Haram terrorist attacks have killed over 30,000 people and displaced about 3 million since July 2009, when the violence started in the country’s northeast states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe across an area roughly the size of Belgium.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, SCOOPER, reported that 356 Nigerian soldiers fighting Boko Haram have tendered their resignation.
The soldiers wrote a letter to the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, seeking voluntary retirement over “loss of interest”.
Quoting the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service soldiers/rating/airmen (Revised) 2017, the soldiers asked for approval to leave the Nigeria Army due to low morale and poor welfare for them and their families by the army.
