Premier League Champions Liverpool in a continuous pursuit of top-flight immortality got a humiliating defeat at the Emirates as two defensive blunders by star players Van Dijk and Goalkeeper Alisson Becker gave Arsenal a 2-1 victory over them.
In what seemed like a reoccurrence from the North London derby on Sunday against Tottenham, Arsenal’s goalie Emiliano Martinez committed a howler in an attempt to clear a freekick taken by Robertson barely 13 minutes into the game. Firmino charged down the kick but his finish hit the woodwork, clattering off to safety.
The Reds got rewarded with an early lead for an excellent attacking showpiece in the 20th minute when Mane sent the ball into the goal from close range with Robertson responsible for squarely sending in the pass to the former in the box.
Arsenal got their ‘stars’ to thank for the opportunity to pull one back, capitalising on an embarrassing blunder by Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk as he undercooked a pass between Fabinho and Alisson. Alexandre Lacazette wasted no time in pouncing on it, rounding off Alisson Becker to level the scoreline to 1-1 in the 32nd minute.
In what appeared to be a ‘curse’ of blunders for the Reds on the night, Alisson Becker was the culprit this time as in an attempt to get a pass across to Robertson, Lacazette at alert seized the ball again and puts in an early cross to Nelson, the 20-year-old youngster rolled in the ball into the net for his first-ever Premier League goal in the 44th minute with the Gunners going into the break with a 2-1 lead at half-time.
The hosts came into the second half fully defensive for the first six minutes as the Reds pressed on in a correction agenda at goal.
Mohamed Salah got unlucky in the 53rd minute despite his intelligence at trying to generate something around the box as his power shot got parried over the bar by a narrow margin in a fine show of diving skill by Martinez.
A brilliant pass by Robertson from the center was picked up by Mane who took the ball forward in a racy challenge with his opponent but the end result was a side netting effort.
A clever cross from Aubameyang in the 90th minute was wasted by Joe Willock.
Five minutes of additional time made no difference with the scoreline ending at 2-1.
The defeat is Liverpool’s third of the season having recorded their first against Watford in February this year and Manchester City a fortnight ago.
